Why Your GBP Category Choice Matters More Than You Think
Your primary Google Business Profile category is the single strongest signal for which searches your business appears in. Choose wrong, and you're invisible for your most valuable keywords. Choose right, and you're immediately eligible for the map pack.
The problem for epoxy flooring companies: Google doesn't have an "Epoxy Flooring" category. There's no exact match. This means you need to strategically select from related categories — and the choice isn't obvious.
We've seen epoxy contractors categorize themselves as everything from "Painter" to "General Contractor" to "Home Improvement Store." Each of these costs them visibility for the searches that actually bring customers.
The Correct Primary Category: Flooring Contractor
"Flooring Contractor" is the optimal primary category for epoxy flooring companies. Here's why:
- Keyword alignment: People searching for 'epoxy flooring' are searching for a flooring solution. Google matches the search intent to the category
- Competition context: In most markets, you'll compete against tile and hardwood flooring contractors in the map pack — not general contractors or painters
- Service relevance: Google's category system maps directly to service types. "Flooring Contractor" signals that you install/apply floor surfaces, which is exactly what epoxy is
Do NOT use "General Contractor" as your primary. While technically accurate, it's too broad and you'll compete against businesses doing roofing, siding, and remodeling — diluting your epoxy-specific visibility.
Secondary Categories to Add
Google allows up to 9 secondary categories. For epoxy flooring, these additional categories expand your visibility:
- Concrete Contractor — captures searches for concrete-related services, which overlaps heavily with epoxy flooring (concrete prep, sealing, coatings)
- Floor Refinishing Service — captures searches from people looking to restore or upgrade existing floors
- Flooring Store — only if you have a showroom or sell flooring products directly
- Paving Contractor — only if you also do outdoor concrete work
Don't add categories that don't apply to your actual services. Google can and does remove categories that don't match your business, and repeated mismatches can trigger a manual review.
Categories to Avoid
These categories are commonly misused by epoxy flooring companies:
- Painter: While epoxy is technically a coating, Google associates "Painter" with wall and house painting. Your visibility for flooring searches drops significantly
- General Contractor: Too broad. You're competing against every type of contractor in your area instead of focusing on flooring-specific searches
- Home Improvement Store: Only for retail establishments. If you're a service company, this miscategorization can confuse Google's classification
- Warehouse: Some industrial epoxy companies mistakenly use this. It signals storage, not flooring services
How to Update Your Categories
Changing your GBP categories is straightforward but takes time to impact rankings:
- Sign in to Google Business Profile Manager
- Select your business and click "Edit profile"
- Under "Business category," change your primary and add secondaries
- Click "Save" — changes typically process within 3-5 days
After updating categories, expect 2-4 weeks before you see changes in your search visibility. Google needs time to re-evaluate your listing against the new category context.
Pair this with a fully optimized description, 50+ photos, and an active review profile. Categories tell Google what you do — the rest of your profile proves you're good at it.
