Most businesses use 3 or 4.

Thats fine.

Whats not fine is having a garbage one in there.

We audited a small business owner named David last week.

Solar panel cleaning. Whittier California. Family owned.

His reviews are some of the best weve ever seen. Customers writing paragraphs about how he showed them before and after photos of every job. How he showed up on time. How they refered him to three of their neighbors.

4.9 stars. Near perfect.

And when we ran his audit he scored a 58 out of 100.

Not because anything is wrong with his business.

Because Google didnt know where he was.

He serves 41 cities. His website lists every single one. Customers from all over LA County leave him five star reviews mentioning thier city.

Google knew about one city.

Because nobody had filled out the service area field.

Thats it. One field. Empty.

Forty cities worth of potentail customers couldnt find him in local search and it had nothing to do with how good he acutally was. It had nothing to do with his reviews or his work or the way he treats people. It was one blank field in a dashboard.

We fixed it in ten minutes.

This is what most local businesses dont know about Google.

Google doesnt see your work. Google doesnt read your customer texts. Google doesnt know your reputaion by watching you show up on time.

Not because thier reviews are bad. Not because the competition is unbeatable.

Because thier Google Business Profile has a few empty fields that cost nothing to fix.

Heres what we look at when we audit a local business profile.

Service area. Do you have your service cities actualy listed? Or is Google guessing where you operate? This is the one we see blank the most and its the most damaging.

Categories. You get up to 10 slots. Most businesses use 3 or 4 and atleast one is usually wasted on something generic that nobody searches for.

Description. Google gives you 750 characters to explain what you do where you do it and why someone should choose you. Weve seen entire competative markets leave this completley blank. Whoever fills it out first owns it.

Owner photos. Customers upload photos to your listing automaticaly. But photos you upload as the owner rank higher and show first. Big difference.

Services menu. You can list every service you offer with a description and price range. Barely anyone does this. Its free real estate.

Google Posts. A content signal that most businesses set up once and forget. Or never set up at all.

Every one of these is free. Most take under 15 minutes each.

We ran this checklist on a client last week who had a 4.9 star rating and was still nearly invisible across most of his service area.

And most local businesses fail it in ways that have nothing to do with how good they actualy are.

We just finished an audit for a client who has one of the best review records weve ever seen. Customers writing paragraphs. Referrals. Personaly responding to every single review.

But his service area field was empty.

So Google thought he only operated in one city.

Google doesnt rank the best business.

Google ranks the business it understands best.

Those are not the same thing.

We audited a company recently with genuinley exceptional reviews. The kind where customers write paragraphs mention specific things the owner did refer thier neighbors. Real earned trust.

Thier Google profile was nearly invisible across most of thier service area.

Not because theyve done anything wrong. Because they hadnt told Google the full story of what thier business was.

Service cities unconfigured. Services missing from the profile. Categories that added no search value.

Google had a partial picture. And a partial picture means partial visabilty.

The lesson isnt that reputaion doesnt matter. It matters enormously once someone finds you.

The lesson is that finding you is a seperate problem. And it requires you to speak Googles language not just your customers language.

Most businesses spend all thier energy on the latter.

Your business is great. Your Google profile isnt.

We finished an audit recently for exactly this kind of business.

Everything the owner controled directly was exceptionaly done. The service quality the communication the customer follow through. You could see all of it in the reviews.

Everything that required navigating a dashboard and filling out fields?

Mostly untouched.

No configured service area despite operting across dozens of cities. A description that mentioned one location and left out most of the services offered. Category slots either empty or occupied by placeholders that meant nothing to any search query a real customer would make.

The business had been running this way the entire time and doing well by most measures. Referrals coming in. Good reviews building up.
